Multiple web-centric approaches to application development are converging to a small set of Open Standards, Open APIs, Open Platforms based on Web 2.0. This presentation will offer insights into available technologies and toolkits, with real-world examples of how Linux-based mobile telephony can build on web interfaces for a compelling user experience.
Traditional models of application development have been closed, proprietary, and based on C and C++. While this paradigm has served fixed-function small-footprint devices like entry-level mobile phones very well, it has also hindered the development of developer ecosystems enabled by Internet and the Web.
Today, this situation is changing in the mobile industry. The advent of more powerful devices, the pull for desktop-class features, open mobile platforms, and the availability of standards-compliant browsers is making application development based on web technology a reality for mobile phones. Leading handset OEMs are incorporating next-generation Web capabilities in their wares, and leading operators are leveraging these features.
